These 2 pages contain basic information for parents, carers and support workers who find themselves in the position of needing to stand alongside a person who has been a victim of crime.

It is important that people have access to high quality legal advice (it is important for all of us) when they have been the victim of a crime.

The information is aimed at providing you with knowledge that can inform your actions and provide you with links to agencies and services who work in the field.

In our experience many police, lawyers and magistrates come into contact with people with intellectual and learning disabilities (Hayes, 2009).  What is also evident is that often people do not know how to identify that a person has an intellectual disability.  The VOC program has worked very closely with Professor Susan Hayes and recommends the HASI as a useful to for any legal service to assist them identify that a person may have an intellectual disability.

This page is designed to give you information on definitions of intellectual disability, how to recognise a person with an intellectual disability and ways to support a person with an intellectual disability.  There are links to useful resources and our research page contains a range of international literature to assist with your evidence based practice

Training in this area is available and we are happy to provide sessions designed to meet your individual needs.

Information on these pages is generalist information and we recommend strongly that you treat each person as unique and respond to them in an appropriate manner.
